Until 2009 I was a successful business owner, running my own B2B marketing and IT businesses. I worked long hours but enjoyed helping businesses grow through successful marketing campaigns. Life was good.
On 22nd February 2009 life took an unexpected turn when I suffered a Stroke, aged 30. I had to sell my business and concentrate on my recovery for the next couple of years. When I was ready to return to work and begin employment again I realised I didn’t want to go back to the hours I used to work, constantly feeling stressed and under pressure.
In 2012 I made the decision to leave my job and return to self employment – but on my terms this time. This decision proved to be the best one of my life (other than asking Laraine to marry me!) In early 2013 I was offered the opportunity to provide marketing and PR support to a crazy ginger chap called Sean Conway. Sean was planning an attempt to become the first person ever to swim from Lands End to John o’ Groats. Being self employed (and with a very understanding wife) I could take five months away from work and focus on Sean’s journey, based on a 26ft yacht named Friday While.
One of the highlights of that trip was an unexpected stop at the Isle of Eigg as we made our way up the west coast of Scotland. The scenery was stunning and the locals were amazingly hospitable. I made the decision to return one day and bring Laraine.
Fast forward to 2014; Laraine and I had just finished canoeing the Caledonian Canal from Fort William to Inverness and had a couple of days to spare. We visited the island for just 24 hours and that was enough time for Laraine to fall in love and declare she wanted to live here.
On New Years Eve 2014, I received an exciting email offering me the opportunity to live and work on the Isle of Eigg for four months, helping the creative businesses on the island with their marketing strategies. I loved my time on the island and didn’t want to leave. Luckily, the opportunity to purchase Eigg Adventures came at just the right time, as Laraine arrived on the island!
